1. Number of Grafts
The most important factor influencing the duration of the surgery is the number of grafts being transplanted. Hair transplant procedures are often measured in terms of grafts rather than individual hairs, and a single graft can contain anywhere from one to four hair follicles. The more grafts required, the longer the procedure will take.
For example, a transplant involving 2,000 grafts will be quicker than one requiring 4,000 or more grafts. If you’re undergoing a larger procedure, it may even be spread over two days to allow for breaks and better precision.
2. Technique Used: FUE vs. DHI
The specific hair transplant technique can significantly impact the surgery time. The two most common methods—FUE and DHI—both involve different approaches to extracting and implanting hair follicles, which leads to varying times.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): In FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area and then implanted into the recipient area. This technique is less invasive and leaves minimal scarring, but it can be time-consuming, especially if a large number of grafts are required.
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): In the DHI method, the hair follicles are extracted and immediately implanted using a specialized tool called the Choi implanter pen. While this method offers more precision and control over the angle and depth of the implantation, it can take slightly longer due to the delicate nature of the procedure.
3. Surgeon’s Experience
The speed and efficiency of the surgeon and their team also play a role in how long the procedure will take. An experienced hair transplant surgeon who has performed numerous procedures is likely to work more efficiently while maintaining high-quality results. They will also have a well-trained team assisting them, which can reduce the time of the operation.
4. Patient's Health and Skin Condition
The condition of the patient's scalp and general health can also influence the time of the procedure. If the patient has any underlying skin conditions or other health issues, the surgeon may need to take additional precautions, which could prolong the surgery.
5. Breaks During the Procedure
Because hair transplants are long procedures, breaks are often taken throughout the day to allow both the patient and the medical team to rest. These breaks, while necessary, add to the overall length of the procedure.
